Below are 5 skin care tips from Sonya Dakar that will help keep your skin clear and your complexion fresh.
We welcome your feedback and encourage you to share your success stories or your favorite Olympic moments on our Facebook Page.
Do not wear makeup during a workout. As perspiration blends with makeup it turns into a wax like substance that can clog your pores. Keep your skin bare during workouts. This means skip the make-up and yes, even your skincare routine. Instead wash skin immediately after workout and then apply your full skincare routine.
Try: Sensi Wash Facial Cleanser for Sensitive Skin. 100% Natural. Sulfate Free. With Lavender and Oat Kernel Extract.
Whether you are power-walking, jogging or hiking, remember to protect your scalp and hair from the sun. This is particularly true for those with thin hair.
"Skin cancer is very common on the scalp... in thinning individuals - males and females - since it usually stands out to get direct sun exposure," says Dr. Paul McAndrews, clinical professor at the USC School of Medicine.
You don’t need any special product- a good spf30 sunblock will do. Apply to hair and scalp as you would a conditioner to keep your scalp protected and your hair moist. Applying sunscreen to your hair will also protect it from chlorine in pools, especially important for those with color treated hair. When applying, the key is to lightly rub the product directly into the scalp because otherwise it will absorb into the follicle and offer little protection to the skin.
Try: Daily Face Shield sunblock with SPF30 broad spectrum protection from harmful UVA/AVB rays that cause skin cancer and age skin prematurely. Daily Face Shield is a paraben, lanolin, and fragrance-free sunscreen that will not clog pores and is ideal for sensitive skin types.
Try: Acidophilus Flora - A high quality probiotic supplement designed to improve and maintain your overall intestinal health.
Organic Omega Booster - Nourishing and hydrating serum made with 100% natural flaxseed oil.
Probiotics have been shown to be a safe and effective treatment for acne when taken orally and used topically. The active probiotic organisms (lactobacillus and bifidobacterium) in this Clarifying Acidophilus Flora Mask naturally produce lactic acid which helps diminish acne causing bacteria and smooth away skin imperfections.
To make a wonderful probiotics mask at home you will need:
- 2-3 Capsules of a high quality probiotic supplement (look for one with live cultures)
- 2 Tablespoons of flaxseed oil (I love to use the Organic Omega Booster)
Break open the probiotic capsules and pour contents into a small bowl. Mix with flaxseed oil and apply to cleansed skin. Let sit for 7-10 minutes and then massage to boost circulation. Rinse and follow with a few drops of facial oil or moisturizer.
Your skin will glow because the mask not only clarifies and brightens skin, but the granules in the probiotics help to detox and decongest skin, and the flaxseed oil, high in omega-3 and anti-oxidants, will help hydrate skin as well!
Kale is a super food packed with antioxidants and vitamins A, C & K. These anti oxidants fight skin damaging free radicals and help reduce dark circles. Kale is also a source of indole-3-carbinol, a chemical which boosts DNA repair in cells and appears to block the growth of cancer cells. The pear and banana contain essential vitamins, nutrients and fiber to boost energy, healthy digestion and protect our cells from free-radical damage. Lastly, the flax seeds add a huge boost of omega-3’s and the Ultima Power helps promote a lean and healthy body while it regulates sugar to lower your body’s BMI index. All in all, this shake offers many healthy benefits for both your skin and body.
- 1 fresh pear
- 1 banana
- 1/2 cup Fresh kale
- 1/2 cup Almond Milk
- 2 Tablespoons ground flax seeds
- 2 Scoops Vanilla Protein Powder (Ultima Power)
- 1 cup Ice
This last skin care tip is for a part of our body often overlooked. Your lips are very vulnerable to sun damage due to their thin skin layer which does not contain much sun-blocking melanin. Lips are also continuously exposed making them further prone to sun damage. Protect them quickly and easily by always applying lip balm with SPF and remember to re-apply often!
